About the film

The iconic tower of Narozenní Panny Marie church in Písek has its caretaker. Alois Němec is a tower carer. Not only does he fondly offer information about the tower, city and its mutual history, but he also likes to venture into the photography field by taking photos of various Písek’s nooks. Not minding the weather, he is willing to walk up or climb up a place only to capture something special. His life motto “to be helpful” is fulfiled daily, not only by his service in the tower but also by connecting with people with whom he can share happiness, good and love.

Film facts

In the summer term of the first year at university, we were asked to develop documentary film plots for an assignment called “Písecké marginálie” that every director had to shoot when he/she enrolled in the second year. As for the key subject for my project, I chose to make a documentary portrait of Mr Alois Němec, the longest-serving tower caretaker in Czechia, whom I met a year prior at a summer music academy in Písek. From our first interaction, I was certain about making a film documenting his story. The subject along with treatment was approved by the tutor Jan E. Svatoš straightaway. The finished piece was later classified as the best documentary of the class and later awarded in the category "Best short documentary" at Brno film festival.
